A cyberattack hit refrigeration systems in more than 400 supermarkets in France this week, according to several major food retailers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 300 shops from the Intermarch\u00e9 and Netto chains were affected, as well as 80 from Coop\u00e9rative U and 30 from Monoprix. The attack targeted systems made by three refrigeration companies that remotely control refrigerators, according to France\u2019s National Cybersecurity Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack and prosecutors said they had yet to identify the culprits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some shops, the attack forced workers to throw out food that required refrigerating, according to shop staff and photographs from several supermarkets. In other cases, technicians acted fast enough to prevent damage to the products, according to the head of Coop\u00e9rative U, Dominique Schelcher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr. Schelcher said in a broadcast interview on Tuesday that the attack was \u201cunprecedented,\u201d as well as \u201cunexpected\u201d and \u201cextremely serious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\u2019re attacking the French people\u2019s food supply,\u201d he told RTL radio. \u201cIn my entire professional career, I\u2019ve never seen anything like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though Mr. Schelcher declined to estimate losses at this stage, he said that a failing refrigeration system could cost a small supermarket the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars. For a hypermarket, losses could reach roughly $220,000, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Julien Fr\u00e9ret, a supermarket manager in a small town in northern France, told Reuters on Monday that the shop had suffered a \u201ctotal loss of fresh and frozen\u201d products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe never thought we\u2019d see this in our rural setting,\u201d he said, adding: \u201cDon\u2019t bother going to our shop today because we have to put it all in the rubbish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kirsten Tate, a spokeswoman for Danfoss, one of the companies that makes the affected refrigeration systems, said in an email that a \u201climited number\u201d of refrigeration management systems had been affected \u2014 often outdated ones that no longer received software or security updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDanfoss has long advised customers to keep supported systems updated with the latest firmware,\u201d she said, adding that the company was \u201cin close contact with affected customers to support them in addressing the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paris prosecutor\u2019s office said this week that its cybercrime division was working to \u201cidentify the victims and establish a link between the attack and the damage reported in terms of food spoilage and fires.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
